Mission

Mission: To respond thoughtfully and responsibly to my experiences of drinking and dining at restaurants with regard to the quality, service, preparation, presentation and overall experience received thereat. The standpoint is one who respects the crafts of the chef and sommelier and who seeks to understand their choices in the kitchen and cellar and grow in knowledge. In this, I will seek to be fair, reasoned, direct and constructive and aim to keep my ego in check on our mutual journeys through the worlds of food and wine.

IWFS KL President’s Dinner 2017 Auction Wines and Charity Details

The Billecart Salmon Rose - lovely colour!
CHARITY AUCTION WINES
SESSION 1

LOT 1 - 2 DOMAINE VINCENT GIRARDIN PULIGNY MONTRACHET LES COMBETTES 1ER CRU 2011
(Donated by Eric Goh)
A highly expressive nose offers up floral, white peach and lightly spiced pear aromas that complement well the pretty and beautifully refined, rich and detailed medium-bodied flavors. (Allen Meadows 91-94)

LOT 2 – 1 CLOS DU MARQUIS 2010 and 2012 (1 bottle each)
(Donated by David Teh)
The famous former second wine of Chateau Leoville Las Cases which now stands on its own, as a separate wine of the prestigious Delon stable of wines. Quality and sense of terroir always comes through impeccably.

LOT 3 - 1 DOMAINE MONGEARD MUGNERET ECHEZEAUX GRAND CRU 2014
(Donated by Vie du Vin)
One of the prestigious Vosne Grand crus. There is enough wood to notice framing the highly spiced nose of plum, floral and Asian-style tea nuances. The very supple barely medium weight flavors possess good complexity. (Allen Meadows 88-91)

LOT 4 – 1 ISOLE E OLENA CEPPARELLO 2006 (1500ML)
(Donated by Paul Ravelli)
A most respected classic styled producer in the higher slopes of Chianti. Knockout nose of floral red berries, red cherry syrup, coffee and minerals. Then suave, silky and plump, with harmonious acidity giving life and definition to the raspberry, plum and delicate licorice flavors. (Vinous 95)

LOT 5 – 1 BOND ESTATE PLURIBUS 2010
(Donated by Wong Chee Weng)
To quickly summarize this project that has been remarkably successful since the debut vintage, Bond is the project of the visionary Bill Harlan, the proprietor of Harlan Estate. World-class Cabernet Sauvignons are produced under this label that showcase different Napa micro-climates/terroirs. (Wine Advocate 97)

LOT 6 - 1 BOLLINGER SPECIAL CUVEE (3000ml)
(Donated by Vintry)
Bollinger is of course one of the great names in Champagne. The Special Cuvee is typically one of the most famous non-vintage wines and also known as the James Bond champagne in recent years. This is a rare jeroboam of this wine which will be most suited to celebrate a special occasion.

LOT 7 - 1 CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1998
(Donated by Dato Jeremy Diamond)
One of the almost mythical Pauillac First growth wines. Like many of its peers, the 1998 has filled out spectacularly. Now in the bottle, this opaque black/purple-colored offering has increased in stature, richness, and size. (Wine Advocate 96)

LOT 8 - 1 CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1989
(Donated by Dato Koay Soon Eng)
If one were to evaluate the bouquet on a 50-100 point scale, it would probably merit a 96 or 97. This is undoubtedly an outstanding Mouton, comparable stylistically to the ready-to-drink 1985. (Wine Advocate 93)

LOT 9 – 1 CHATEAU HAUT BRION 1986
(Donated by Dato Koay Soon Eng)
Mirroring the La Mission, in this vintage that Haut-Brion occupies a higher quality level, with more complexity and vivacity on the nose: dusky black fruit, warm gravel, terracotta and cigar humidor. Lovely! (Wine Advocate 93)

Lot 10 - 1 DOMAINE COMTE DE VOGUE BONNES MARES GRAND CRU 1998
(Donated by Teh Lip Jin)
This was excellent in its youth and it just seems to get better and better with its spicy and distinctly earthy nose of now mostly secondary fruit and game aromas. There is a clean and very supple mouth feel to the large-scaled flavors that possess both excellent volume and concentration before culminating in a robust and energetic finish that displays outstanding depth and length. (Allen Meadows 93)

LOT 11 - 1 CHATEAU MARGAUX 1996
(Donated by Dato Jeremy Diamond)
The 1996 Chateau Margaux, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, must be a strong contender for wine of the vintage. This may well turn out to be the Left Bank pinnacle of the 1990s. (Wine Advocate 100)

LOT 12 - 1 CHATEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 1986
(Donated by Dato Koay Soon Eng)
This finish displays immense purity and refinement, one of the most mineral-driven Lafites that I have encountered, whilst the aftertaste seems to linger for over one minute. It must rank as one of the finest wines from the estate. (Wine Advocate 98)

The Auction Wines
SESSION 2

Lot 13 – 1 CHATEAU BEYCHEVELLE 2007
(Donated by Dr Stephen Hall)
A strong effort in this mid-weight, charming vintage, this potential sleeper of the vintage exhibits deep black raspberry, black currant, and floral notes, a sweet entry on the palate, ripe tannin, low acidity, and a round, generous mouthfeel. It should drink well for a decade. (Wine Advocate 89)

Lot 14 - 1 TENUTA DELL’ORNELLAIA ORNELLAIA 1994
(Donated by David Teh)
Ornellaia is firmly entrenched amonst the most prestigious estates in Italy on the Bolgheri coast. The Ornellaia estate wine is always Cabernet Sauvignon dominated and age worthy.

LOT 15 - 1 CHATEAU PICHON LONGUEVILLE COMTESSE DE LALANDE 1986
(Donated by David Teh)
A super second wine from Pauillac. The 1986 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has long been one of the best wines from the estate alongside the 1982. (Wine Advocate 95)

LOT 16 - 1 OPUS ONE 2007
(Donated by Wong Chee Weng)
One of the strongest wines ever made at Opus One, the 2007 has terrific black currant fruit, licorice, incense, and subtle smoke, an opulent, even voluptuous mouthfeel, dazzling purity and texture, and a skyscraper-like mouthfeel. This is a sensational Opus One, with sweet tannin and impressive precision and depth. (Wine Advocate 95)

LOT 17 - 2 CHATEAU D’YQUEM 1997 (375ML)
(Donated by Dato Jeremy Diamond)
A sensational Yquem, 1997 may be this estate's finest effort since 1990. The 1997's light gold color is accompanied a gorgeous perfume of caramel, honeysuckle, peach, apricot, and smoky wood. Full-bodied and unctuously-textured, with good underlying acidity as well as loads of sweetness and glycerin, it looks to be a great vintage for this renowned Sauternes estate. (Wine Advocate 96)

LOT 18 – 1 CHATEAU CHEVAL BLANC 1994
(Donated by David Teh)
One of the great Right bank estates of Bordeaux. Here it has an intriguing nose with expressive Cabernet Franc aromas that develop more floral, wilted petal tones with aeration. There are touches of desiccated red cherry. (Wine Advocate 88)

LOT 19 – 1 PENFOLDS GRANGE 1991
(Donated by David Teh)
Medium brick colored with a garnet core, the 1991 Grange has a wonderful perfume of black and red fruits preserves, prunes, figs and plum preserves with suggestions of licorice and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, rich, powerful and spicy right through the long finish, this Grange still has loads of life and should cellar for another 10-20 years. (Wine Advocate 95)

LOT 20 - 1 CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 2004
(Donated by Dr Rajan Karunakaran)
A powerful, classic, dense ruby/purple-hued Mouton with a full-bodied style, brutal tannin, impressive concentration, and a primordial backwardness that will require 10-15 years of cellaring. Built along the lines of a modern day 1966 or 1988, the 2004 reveals plenty of power and concentration. (Wine Advocate 92)

LOT 21 - 1 CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1988
(Donated by David Teh)
The most sonorous and brooding of all the First Growths. The 1998 possesses a dark garnet/purple color in addition to a complex bouquet of underbrush, cedar, walnuts, and licorice-tinged black currants. (Parker 90)

Lot 22 - 1 DOMAINE DUGAT PY MAZIS CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU 2014
(Donated by Wong Yin-How)
Only around 800 bottles produced every vintage. A brooding and almost grudging nose features subtle floral, earth and densely fruited dark berry and animale suffused aromas. Robust, powerful and broad-scaled flavors brim with an abundance of dry extract that push the prominent tannic spine to the background on the explosive intense finish. The hugely long and markedly mineral-driven finish really fans out. (Allen Meadows 96)

LOT 23- 1 CHATEAU LATOUR 1996
(Donated by Dato Jeremy Diamond)
The most aristocratic of the First growths of Pauillac. Latour is always brooding and majestic, with great reservoir of mineral and dark fruited flavours. This is an excellent vintage for Latour and also is at its peak drinking window, though with the capacity to age for another 2 decades. (Wine Advocate 95)

LOT 24 - 1 CHATEAU PETRUS 1997
(Donated by Dato Koay Soon Eng)
One of the icons of the world of fine wine. The dense plum/ruby/purple color is accompanied by a closed bouquet of mocha, dried tomato skin, and black fruits. In the mouth, it is one of the most muscular 1997s, exhibiting outstanding concentration, length, intensity, and depth, copious tannin, and a fine mouth-feel. (Wine Advocate 92-94)

THE SUPPORTED CHARITIES

This year, the IWFS Kuala Lumpur Committee has resolved to support the following three charities:- The Ampang Old Folks Home, Hospice Klang, and Kasih Hospice Care Society.

AMPANG OLD FOLKS HOME

The Ampang Welfare Committee (Ampang Old Folks Home) is located in what was the old Ampang New Village. It commenced operating in 1948 when a group of helpless, elderly people who were incapable of building their own homes were placed in a long house which served as an old folks’ home.

With contributions from the public and the support of the Welfare Department, a new building was completed in 2000 to cater for these unfortunate elderly individuals.

There are presently 25 male residents and 25 female residents staying at the home. There is also a waiting list of ten people.

The home incurs a monthly expenditure of about RM20,000/-, which has to be raised solely from donations. Residents do not pay anything to stay there.

HOSPICE KLANG / HOME PALLIATIVE CARE

Located at 82 Jalan Sri Sarawak 4, Taman Sri Andalas, 41200 Klang.

Created in 1996, Hospice Klang is a not-for-profit, non-political and non-governmental group providing home based palliative care to terminally ill patients of all ethnic groups in the Klang community.

The aims are to alleviate the suffering of the patients and to enhance their quality of life in their remaining days as well as to offer support and advice to the families of cancer patients to help them care better for their relatives.

The hospice has a fulltime doctor, four nurses and twenty volunteers administering to around 150 patients at any one time. Almost all are suffering from some form of cancer. Many of the patients are referred to the hospice by the hospitals in the area. There are no in-patient services. In 2016, 5,002 home visits were made by the medical team. The average patient will only have about 75 days of care before he/she passes away.

There are three grades of patients depending on their financial position: some have free care, some pay a little and some pay a bit more. The hospice relies mainly on public donations. The main costs that the hospice has is for the purchase of medications – mainly pain killers.

New premises for Klang Hospice are currently under construction on land donated by the Selangor State government, with completion due early 2018.

KASIH HOSPICE CARE SOCIETY

Located at 16 Jalan SS3/29, 47300 Petaling Jaya, the Kasih Hospice has been ministering to patients with life limiting diseases, such as cancer and organ failure, irrespective of background, race or religion.

In 2016, 583 patients were cared for. Of these, 410 were suffering from cancer, 121 from end stage renal failure and 52 from other illnesses.

The care team is made up of two trained doctors and six nurses and sixty part-time volunteers. The object is to provide care at the patients’ homes. A visit is made at least once a week. The volunteers visit patients both at home and in hospitals – often just to chat and talk.

The Hospice offers the following services
  • Managing patients’ symptoms (ie pain, nausea, shortness of breath etc.)
  • Provide medication for symptom control
  • Lending equipment free of charge (eg oxygen concentrators, ripple mattresses, wheelchairs)
  • Education of basic nursing skills to patients and families/carers
  • Provide emotional/grief support to patients’ families
The running expenses are in the order of RM50,000/- a month. These are covered principally by donations from the public.
